PASCO's Water Quality SPARKlab was created by the educational team at PASCO as part of our rich library of downloadable lab activities for the SPARK Science Learning System or on computers running SPARKvue.

Students use a conductivity sensor to determine the quality of water as they measure the concentration of ions present in the water.

How It Works

This activity is designed to provide students with an understanding of how small amounts of pollutants found in everyday life like salts, soaps, and fertilizers can change the overall quality of a body of water.

  • During the activity students are introduced to Total Dissolved Solids and how they are related to water quality.
  • Students establish a measurement technique using a conductivity sensor to determine the quality of water samples.
  • Students create a self-guided experiment to determine the amount of pollutant needed to change the quality of a sample of purified water from good to bad.
